Students can use the gold pieces to purchase items.
What items?
I’m glad you asked. Thinking of items was actually fun. This is where the DnD exposure helped. I searched for magical items and then came up with this list as a starter:
- Rod of…
- Robe of…
- Potion of…
- Dust of…
- Elixer of…
- Scroll of…
- Necklace of…
- Cloak of…
- Belt of…
- Ring of…
I also watched a great video by Michael Matera, author of Explore Like a Pirate, where he talked about adding Items to your gamified course. In his video, he also showed the viewers how to create cards for these items. He provided a template, but I did some searching and found a different one I liked.
For the items, I brainstormed with the 8th grade team for what they thought their kids would work for. The students are not fans of a program called Imagine Math, so skipping one of those would be a hot item. The students also like to use their phones for leisure, so phone time was also an option. Michael Matera also mentioned adding a gaming item such as something that would double XP on an encounter.
So, I came up with:
- Ring of Resistance – Skip any Imagine Math Lesson (10GP)
- Scroll of Increase – Double XP on an encounter (5GP)
- Elixir of Leisure – 10 minutes of phone time (2GP)
Here are my fancy cards:
I still haven’t written in a visit to a village yet, so I still have time to come up with more items. I needed to come up with at least three options to show students in the onboarding module – something to pique their interest.
